Snapshot

First Time Books is a personalized children’s book brand built around a simple emotional idea: children light up when they see themselves inside a story.

The project combines storytelling, personalization, giftability, ecommerce, and keepsake product design. Each book is made to feel specific to the child receiving it, while still being simple enough for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends to order without friction.

The larger strategy is not just to sell books. It is to create a brand around childhood firsts, family memory, and meaningful gifts.

What It Is

First Time Books creates personalized storybooks and workbooks for kids. Current products include books for bedtime, birthdays, holidays, potty training, ABCs, counting, reading logs, journaling, shapes, and zoo adventures.

The brand lives at the intersection of children’s publishing and custom gifting. The product has to work in two ways at once: it needs to feel magical to the child and trustworthy to the adult buying it.

Why I Built It

I started First Time Books because childhood moments deserve to be remembered.

There are a lot of personalized products that feel loud, disposable, or novelty-driven. I wanted to build something quieter and more lasting: books that families would keep on a shelf, revisit at bedtime, and eventually remember as part of a child’s early years.

The opportunity was to take ordinary milestones and turn them into personal stories. First words, first routines, first holidays, first learning moments, first signs of confidence. These are small things while they are happening, but they become the memories families hold onto.

What I Worked On

Brand

The brand direction centers on warmth, memory, and personal attention. First Time Books should feel like a thoughtful gift, not a mass-produced novelty item.

The voice is plainspoken and sincere. It speaks to adults who want to give something with meaning, while keeping the child as the emotional center of the experience.

Product

The product system is built around repeatable book concepts that can be personalized with a child’s details. Each book needs a clear occasion, a simple promise, and an easy path to purchase.

The collection includes both milestone books and learning-based books, which gives the brand room to serve different buying moments: bedtime routines, birthday gifts, seasonal gifts, potty training, early literacy, early math, and everyday encouragement.

Website

The site is structured as a direct-to-consumer ecommerce experience. It needs to show the books quickly, communicate personalization clearly, and reassure buyers that the product is thoughtful and well-made.

The founder presence is also important. Because these are personal gifts, the site benefits from feeling human. The message is not only “buy a custom book”; it is “I care about helping you create something a family will remember.”

Content

The content strategy supports both discovery and emotional proof. Blog posts can highlight specific book examples, explain how personalized stories help kids engage, and connect individual products to moments parents already care about.

The goal is to make each product feel less abstract. Instead of simply describing a personalized zoo book, content can show how a named child becomes part of the adventure and why that changes the reading experience.

What I Learned

Personalization only matters when it serves the emotional experience. A child’s name on a page is a feature. A child feeling recognized inside a story is the value.

The buyer and the user are different, which shapes every decision. The adult needs clarity, confidence, and giftability. The child needs delight, familiarity, and a reason to ask for the book again.

The best product ideas are often built around moments people already value. First Time Books works when it attaches to real family routines and milestones instead of trying to invent new ones.

Current State

First Time Books is live with a growing product catalog and a developing content engine. The next phase is about sharpening the collection, improving conversion, strengthening the brand story, and building a more intentional path from product discovery to purchase.

Possible next moves:

  • Refine the homepage around the keepsake positioning.

  • Improve product pages with clearer previews and personalization examples.

  • Build stronger collections around milestones, learning, holidays, and bedtime.

  • Create a more consistent editorial system for book-specific content.

  • Add customer proof, gift guides, and founder-led storytelling.
